ISO 21001 is the management system standard for organisations that educate. It is built on the ISO 9001 structure but reoriented around learners rather than customers — because the person receiving the service, the person paying for it and the person relying on the outcome are often three different people, which no general quality standard accounts for.
What makes it different from ISO 9001
An educational organisation has beneficiaries beyond its immediate customer: the learner, the parent or sponsor, the employer who hires the graduate, and the regulator. ISO 21001 requires those to be identified separately and their needs addressed distinctly. It also introduces requirements ISO 9001 does not contain at all — on curriculum design, on assessment integrity, on learner support, and on accessibility for learners with special needs.

In the UAE, ISO 21001 sits alongside rather than replaces the requirements of the education regulators — KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi and the Ministry of Education federally. It provides a management system framework; the regulator's requirements remain separate and continue to apply.
The certification process
Stage 1 reviews the documented system, confirms scope, and examines how learners and other beneficiaries have been identified. Stage 2 assesses implementation: curriculum and assessment records, educator competence evidence, learner support arrangements in practice, satisfaction data and what was done with it. The certificate runs three years with annual surveillance.
Our position
ITMAD is an accredited certification body and conducts ISO 21001 certification in accordance with the principles of ISO/IEC 17021-1: audits are planned and conducted by competent auditors, findings are recorded against objective evidence, and the certification decision is taken independently of the audit team.
Under those same principles we do not design or implement the management system we certify. We audit and we certify; the system remains yours. Where an accredited certificate is specifically required by a regulator or client, confirm what they will accept before commissioning the work.
